January - 1933

Table of Contents

Myrtle does not write in her diary, on a regular basis, until October of 1933. There is no explanation of what was going on, and why she had stopped. There are a few entries that have been transcribed here. Blank periods between entries are just as they are in the original hand-written diaries.



February - 1933

3. We all surprised Jess and Stanley for their birthday. Had oysters.

9. Ella and her friend Roy and Margarete and Allen, Aldene and Agnes were all here for supper last nite. Geo. Edwards has been here since the first of October.



March - 1933

5. Geo., Boyd and I were at Aldene's for dinner.

12. Boyd went to church and got medicine for Geo. He isn't feeling so well. I stayed home with him.

13. Geo. is bad sick. He called us at 11:15 last nite. I was up with him all nite. We had the Dr. at 3:30. He said to call the folks. Lida got here about 10:30. Ella brot her. Elsie, Mrs. Fowler and Mrs. Roberts were here all day.

14. Geo. died last nite at 9:30. Edna and Leonard and Joe and the boys were here. They took him to Iva's.

15. Geo. was buried today.

16. Boyd's birthday - 63.



June - 1933

10. My birthday - 60.

17. Frank's came. Got here about 10:30.

18. The children were all home to day. Frank went home. Flossie and the children stayed. Flossie and LaVerne went home with Jess and Elsie.

23. Aldene is sick in bed. Flossie is there.



July - 1933

4. Aldene is real sick. Frank came to day.

10. Aldene went to the Hospital in Jacksonville to day. I went with them. Flossie is here this week.

11. Allen, Agnes, Boyd, Flossie and I went to see Aldene to day.

12. Allen went to Jacksonville to stay all night.

13. Agnes and I went with Helen. Aldene was operated on this morning. Got along good. Allen, Agnes and I stayed all nite.

14. Allen and Agnes went home about noon. I stayed.

15. Aldene is doing real good.



August - 1933

13. Frank's went home to day. Elsie, Bobbie and the baby went home with them.

14. Aldene is here. I washed this morning.

17. Aldene went to Helen's. Jess, Harold, Lynn, Agnes and I started to Franks about 7 o'clock this eve. Got there at 1:30 their time.

18. We all went to Chicago to day. Ate dinner and spent the day at the lake. The children all went in the water.

19. We left all the children at home but Jesse Lucille. They all went to the show. We went to Chicago to the W.L.S. Barn Dance. It was fine. We got home at midnight. The children were all having a big time.

20. We left for home right after dinner. Got to Jess' about 7. Allen came over after Agnes and I.

27. On the October 8th1933, Myrtle wrote that the family reunion was held at their farm on August 27th.



September - 1933

4. Aldene's went home to day. I went with her and stayed all nite.

5. Boyd came after me at 6 o'clock A.M.

6. Our Anniversary - 40 years.

10. We went to Florence's with Allen's to day to Little Allen's birthday dinner.

11. Allen's birthday.

17. We went to S.S. and church and to Jess' for dinner. Jim and Florence were there.

19. Jess Goad50 died this morning. We were in at Bess' all day.

20. Took chickens and sweet potatoes to Bess' for dinner.

21. Jess Goad was buried to day.

24. Aunt Joe, Vernon and Decemma and Paul and his girl, Aldene's and Lida and Jess' were all here for dinner.

26. We went to Kline's 50th Anniversary after dinner. Took Aunt Carrie and Allen and Aldene. It rained all morning.

27. Aldene and I went to Mrs. Frazee's to the Ladies Aid. Had a nice time.

28. I went to class meeting at Mrs. Swift's in the after noon. Sang a solo. It was beautiful.

30. I helped at the church all after noon and eve. Frank came this morning. Brot Marie and Allen with him. We took Onie home. It rained awful hard.



October - 1933

1. (Sun) We went to church and S.S. Frank went with us. Went to Aldene's for dinner. He left about 3 o'clock for St. Louis. Jim and Florence went up to Edna's and came here for supper.

2. (Mon) I washed and ironed, churned, scrubbed and baked a cake to day.

3. (Tue) Mrs. Turner came over last nite. We picked beans this morning. Aldine, Flossie Williamson and I went to Litchfield to see Mrs. Duke and Ruby, both were better. It was dark when I got home.

4. (Wed) Mrs. Turner and I picked beans again this morning.

5. (Thu) I made apple butter to day.

6. (Fri) I canned tomatoes to day. I've got 117 qts canned and 99 bottles and 13 qts of tomato juice.

7. (Sat) Allen, Aldene and Agnes were here all nite. Jess was here for dinner. He is helping shock beans.

8. (Sun) We went to S.S. and church, to Aldene's for dinner. It has rained all day. I forgot to write that the 27th of August the family reunion was here. Pence's and Myra's and all of our own family except Iva and Joe were here. All seemed to have a good time.

9. (Mon) We cleaned the dining room. Put up the stove. I canned 9 qts of tomatoes and picked and Boyd and I hulled a bu of lima beans.

10. (Tue) Franks's and Flossie's 15th Anniversary. I churned and baked bread. Helped pick a bu of lima beans this morning. Aldene came out at noon. She and Boyd hulled the bu and I picked another bu. I canned 7 qts this morning.

11. (Wed) I canned 16 qts of lima beans this morning. Curt and Emma were here this eve. They got 2 chickens and 1 ½ doz eggs.

12. (Thu) We went to the Miners picnic and to the W.L.S. show. Jim and Florence came up for the show at 7 o'clock.

13. (Fri) I churned this morning and picked ½ bu of lima beans and went over to Jess' after Boyd at 4 o'clock. They are putting beans in the barn. I got a letter from Flossie, said she and Frank were going to the World's Fair Wed.

14. (Sat) I was at Elsie's. Helped her get dinner for men.

15. (Sun) We were at Jess' for dinner again to day.

16. (Mon) I washed and ironed, churned and baked cookies to day.

17. (Tue) I cleaned the kitchen and pantry to day.

18. (Wed) I cleaned the two bed rooms to day. It has been a beautiful day. The men put hay in the barn. Mr. Barns and Lewis and Jess and Stanley were here.

19. (Thu) I made pickle and ironed curtains and put them up to day. It rained all morning.

20. (Fri) Harry and Deb were here for dinner to day. It rained nearly all day.

21. (Sat) We had a terrible storm and rain last nite but it is nice to day. We went to town to Aldene's for dinner.

22. (Sun) We went to S.S. and church. Allen, Aldene, Agnes and Aunt Harriet were here for dinner and Jim, Florence, Mrs. Walker and the children were here for supper. I asked Jess' but they didn't come. We went to church this eve and to Aldene's and heard President Roosevelt give a talk.

23. (Mon) Boyd helped me and we washed and washed 1 quilt and three comforts. I ironed after dinner.

24. (Tue) I went and helped make apple butter at Jess' to day. They had 15 gal.

25. (Wed) I made a lot of apple jelly to day. We began shucking corn to day.

26. (Thu) Jess killed a hog last nite. I went over early this morning and got some meat. Aldene and Agnes were here when I got back. Mr. and Mrs. Andereck were here for supper.

27. (Fri) Henry East, Ralph and Lary Andereck came out to pick beans. Were here for dinner. They brot the finest lot of pop corn. We washed bed clothes again this morning.

28. (Sat) I cleaned up the house good this morning. Jess and the boys were here this afternoon.

29. (Sun) We went to S.S. and church and to Aldene's for dinner. Allen and Aldene went to Divernon and we went to Sam's a while.

30. (Mon) I washed and went over and helped Elsie get dinner. Her mother was there to and we went over to see Iva. They are thrashing beans.

31. (Tue) We went to a party at the school house last nite.



November - 1933

1. (Wed) We went to town for supper and to the party at the church. Aldene went to Litchfield to see a Dr. This is a beautiful morning.

3. (Fri) I went to town to Floyd Talkington's funeral.

4. (Sat) Boyd and I picked up and hulled 1 ½ bu of walnuts this morning.

5. (Sun) We went to S.S. and church. Jim, Florence, Mrs. Walker and the children and Aldene, Allen and Agnes were here for dinner.

7. (Tue) I washed this morning. The wind was terrible. Cut out a dress after dinner.

8. (Wed) I ironed and churned and sewed to day.

9. (Thu) I sewed on my dress and cut out another one to day. Mrs. Bullard was here this morning.

10. (Fri) The car wouldn't start for me so Boyd went to town too and had it worked on.

11. (Sat) Armistice Day - Allen and Aldene and Agnes stayed all nite and I took Aldene and Agnes home and cleaned her house all over and helped rake and burn her leaves. Jim, Florence, Mrs. Walker and the children came up this morning. They all came home with me and stayed all nite.

12. (Sun) Frank came about 9:45 last nite. Jess', Aldene's, Florence's, Mrs. Walker and Frank were all here for dinner. Had 17 for dinner. Frank was going out thro Kan and Oklahoma, so he left before we were all thro eating.

13. (Mon) Miss Bullard was here this morning. It is real cold and so windy, but the sun is shining.

14. (Tue) I washed and churned to day. Mrs. Gass was here.

15. (Wed) I ironed this morning and went to town. Stopped to see Mrs. Duke.

16. (Thu) I finished my dresses to day.

18. (Sat) We went to the box supper at the school house last nite. All had a good time. Made over $12.00. I went to Florence's with the man that hauls corn. Stayed just 2 hrs. They are all well. Mrs. Walker is going to Springfield at 2:30. We took Mrs. Roberts to town this after noon, after dark when we got home.

19. (Sun) We went to S.S. and church and to Aldene's for dinner. Home at 2:30. Went to Jess' in the eve.

20. (Mon) I washed and churned this morning and cleaned yard till dark. I sure was tired.

21. (Tue) It rained some this morning. Made the men late going to the field. I ironed this morning.

22. (Wed) I went out to Harriet's to the Bois 'D'Arc Ladies Aid, took Aldene, Lou Hay and Sadie Stone with me. It was dark when I got home.

24. (Fri) Elsie and Ootie and Bess and Bernice were here for dinner.

25. (Sat) Elsie and Stanley51 and the children were here for dinner. Jess and Lynn ate in the field.

26. (Sun) We went to town. I went to S.S. and church. Boyd was out of Razer blades so couldn't shave. We were alone all after noon and evening

27. (Mon) I washed and ironed to day and sewed a little on my quilt.

28. (Tue) Mr. and Mrs. Gass and 2 little ones were here till 9 o'clock last nite. Miss Bullard was here this morning. Jess and Stanley are both here for dinner. Stanley is shucking for us. Aldene called up, said some body broke into their house Sun. eve. Took all the money out of her pocket book. $1.50 or more. This is a beautiful day.

29. (Wed) Jess and Elsie, Bobbie and Ootie were over last nite. Stanley stayed all nite. We finished shucking corn this morning. I have been sick all day.

30. (Thu) Thanksgiving - We went to the sun rise prayer meeting. Ate breakfast at Aldene's and went with them to Florence's. We had a fine dinner and came home with Jess'. It was way after dark when we got the chores done. We went to Orval Keins after supper, so it was a full day.



December - 1933

1. (Fri) I cleaned up the house and churned. We went to church this eve. The Calvary Four from California put on a program.

3. (Sun) We went to S.S. and church. Allen and Aldene and Agnes and Boyd and I then went out to Edwin Williamson's to a big dinner. Their Anniversary. There was 60 there. Had a nice time.

4. (Mon) I washed and ironed to day.

6. (Wed) We went over to Jess' last nite. Elsie, Harold, Lynn and I went to the play at the High School. Allen, Aldene, Agnes, Boyd and I went to Springfield this after noon.

8. (Fri) I went over to Mrs. Gass' and made a kettle of soap this after noon.

9. (Sat) I dressed 3 chickens and baked a cake and churned this morning. We went to town, was gone just an hour.

10. (Sun) Jim and Florence and the children came up this morning. It is their 14th Anniversary. They brot oysters and Jess' and Aldene's were all here for supper.

11. (Mon) I washed this morning.

13. (Wed) We went to Aldene's for supper and to prayer meeting.

14. (Thu) Mrs. Gass went to Springfield. Dorris and the babies stayed here all day. I baked Christmas cookies.

15. (Fri) It has been just like Spring all day. Virgel and Mable came to Elsie's for dinner. They all came over here to hunt. Elsie and Mable went with them all after noon.

16. (Sat) We went to town this after noon. Took a chicken for the jitney supper. Went to a party at Mr. Gass' in the eve.

17. (Sun) We went to S.S. and church and to Jess' for dinner. Agnes went with us so we took her to town to the candle lite service.

18. (Mon) I've got a terrible cold. Boyd went to town after dinner and got me medicine.

19. (Tue) I went to Mrs. Fowlers and made candy this after noon.

22. (Fri) I intended to dress the goose this morning but it is too warm.

23. (Sat) We dressed the goose this morning. I baked a big Angel food cake and 2 date cakes. Got a letter from Flossie saying they are not coming.

24. (Sun) Frank's surprised us by coming home. They got out here about 6:30. Jess' came over. The children all had a good time. Jim and Florence came up this morning. The whole family were at Aldene's for dinner. We all went to the christmas tree at the church.

25. (Mon) Christmas day - The whole bunch were here for breakfast. Had our Christmas then. Jess and Elsie went to Mrs. Clark's for dinner. Frank's started home right after dinner. Jess' were back here for supper. We had oyster soup. We had 20 for breakfast, 14 for dinner, and 15 for supper. I think this is the best and nicest Christmas we ever had. All got so many nice things.

26. (Tue) I took the tree down and cleaned up the house.

27. (Wed) We started to town. The car went bad and we had to be pushed all the way from Carl Thompson'.

28. (Thu) I worked in Ootie's cabinet all day and went to the show in the evening.

29. (Fri) Ootie's birthday. We took Ootie the cabinet. Was there for dinner. She had a real birthday. Harold and Marie came home with us.

30. (Sat) Allen and Aldene came out for dinner. Agnes stayed all nite.

31. (Sun) Harold's birthday - 15. Jim and Florence came up last nite. Got here at eleven o'clock to go to the dinner at Harry Thomas' with us. We went to S.S. out to Bois 'D'Arc. Deb's brother is so sick. No body went to Harry's. We came back to Aldene's and put on dinner all together. We went to Jess' after supper.
