1. (Sat) Allen, Aldene and Agnes ate New Years Dinner with us. Frank came on the 6 O'clock car1 and we were all at Jess' for supper. Allen put a new radio in at Jess'. 2

18. (Fri) The temperature was down to 20 this morning. It has been cold and windy all day. The phone came in all right this afternoon. Lillie is doing as well as they can expect. Jess had his tooth fixed to day. Elsie was at Florence's.
19. (Sat) Boyd hauled coal this afternoon. I sure have felt bad for two days, but feeling some better to night. Sent Frank a basket of flowers. It has moderatid to day.
20. (Sun) We went to church. I took Newt a chicken and a pint of Whipping cream. He seemed lots better to day. We were at Florence's for dinner. Allen and Aldene were there too. It was a beautiful day. The roads are real good.

1. (Sun) We went to church, home for dinner. The kids went to the timber. We went to Bois 'D'Arc. Allen and Aldene and Agnes came out to stay all night.

10. (Tue) I went to the field for Tob. He had a special Delivery letter. I went to Mrs. Crousis to telephone. Our new lawn mower came to day. It is fine.
11. (Wed) I went to Clara Case's to Club meeting. There were about 35 there. I helped serve and was chairman of the program.
12. (Thu) Florence and Jim took our car and went to Betty's funeral. Aldene and Agnes came out and stayed all day. Jim, Florence and Allen came in time for supper. We all went to the entertainment. It was fine.
13. (Fri) I didn't do much to day. They brot the new corn planter out this evening. It has been so cold all week. The men worked in the field some to day.

16. (Sat) Elsie took Harold27 to the Dr. this morning and he said he had infection in his hand he cut it open. We went over to see him and came home thru town.
17. (Sun) Elsie called up that Harold seemed all right. We left Virden at 7:40. Had a fine trip and got to Franks at 4:40.
18. (Mon) We all went to Chicago and ate dinner at the lake. Just had a wonderful trip. Got home about 5 o'clock.
19. (Tue) We went up town this morning out to Moose Heart and Batavia this after noon, saw the most beautiful homes we ever did see. The children stayed at the play ground. We all went out to the fair grounds this evening, had a nice time.
20. (Wed) We left Frank's at 6 o'clock, had a puncture in Normal. We ate dinner at the park at Bloomington. Went thru the zoo. We got to Virden about 3:30. I got home at 4. Found everything just fine.
21. (Thu) I helped Mrs. Cox cook for the thrashers to day. Had to bring the car home to Boyd so he could go to town to get repairs for his plow, so I went along. We had a terrible rain at 3 o'clock.
22. (Fri) Mrs. Baines28 and Ella were here a few minutes today. We went after Jim and Florence. It is too wet to work.

27. (Sat) We went to the jitney supper and brot Harold and Lynn home with us. Boyd took Harold, Lynn, Agnes and Marie to the show.
28. (Sun) We went to S.S. this morning. Jess and Elsie were here when we got home. We went back to town to church this evening.
29. (Mon) Harold, Lynn and I went to Thomasville this afternoon.
30. (Tue) I washed this morning. Boyd went to town this afternoon and took the boys with him. We got a letter from Frank32 and one from Flossie. Frank is in Peoria and Flossie is at her Mothers. Jess and Elsie came after the boys.
31. (Wed) I went to Mrs. Frazee's to the Ladies Aid meeting, Took Lida with me.
1. (Thu) Rob, Dolph and Marie Pence were here a little while this afternoon. The girls came out and got tomatoes and corn. I am awful tired to night. Rob said Uncle Jim is 76 years old.
2. (Fri) I went to town and took Lida with me this afternoon. Stopped at Daisy's awhile. The baby isn't very well this evening.
3. (Sat) Geo. Drennan's Wedding day. Aldene and Allen have gone. It has been awful hot do day. We are going to town this eve. Geo and Lida are going with us.
4. (Sun) We went to S.S. and church this morning and home for dinner. Went to Ben's a little while this after noon. Mr. and Mrs. Coldicott were there.
5. (Mon) Jim's Birthday and Labor day. I washed this morning. Jim and the girls and the children came out for dinner. Emma was here all afternoon too. Henry Cash's car burned up just south of Ball's corner. Ben and Noie came along after supper and we went down to Lida and Geo's with them. They got a rain in town but we didn't get any.
6. (Tue) Our 34th Anniversary. I ironed this morning. Went to Thomasville, took Lida with me.
7. (Wed) I went to the Bois 'D'Arc church about 1:30 and stayed till after the supper was over. They had a big crowd. It rained nearly all night.

9. (Fri) We went to town to Aldene's for dinner, then Aldene and I went to Mrs. Drury's.
10. (Sat) This is a beautiful day, pretty warm.
11. (Sun) Baby's33 birthday. It is awful hot, 88 in the shade. We went to S.S. and church, came home for dinner, and went over to Mrs. Drennan's. Seen the baby and Geo. and his new wife. Ben and Noie were here this eve.
12. (Mon) I washed and scrubbed every place this morning. Sent Flossie a card. Canned tomatoes after dinner. We went to Lida's this eve. This has been the hottest day ever for September.
13. (Tue) I ironed today. Still hot.
14. (Wed) I went to Aldene's for dinner. She went out to Mrs. Drennans to help make apple butter so I went to Florence's. The Thomasville elevator34 burned last night so we went over to see it this eve. Got a letter from Flossie, they have moved to 137 Loucks St.35 Awful hot.
15. (Thu) Awful hot. We went to town after Florence this eve. Took Geo. and Lida with us.
16. (Fri) Florence and I went to Opal's, her mother had a stroke today. We took Florence home. This is the hottest eve we have had.
17. (Sat) Boyd came near hurting a horse, so he turned them out after dinner. It is 91. We are going to the supper at Divernon tonight.
18. (Sun) We went to the supper last night. It sure was fine. Then we went to the show. It was fine too, and went to see Opal's Mother. They thot she was a little better. I was sick nearly all night. It is raining a little this morning. We are going to Jess' if it doesn't rain too much. It is cooler this morning. Allen, Aldene, Jim and Florence and the children were here when we got home.

26. (Mon) I worked some today. I took up the setting room, Parlor and hall rugs and cleaned every thing.

28. (Wed) I washed this morning. It rained so I couldn't put them out till after noon.
29. (Thu) I ironed this morning. It rained all afternoon and night.
30. (Fri) We helped move Charlie Clark's to town today. We were in the hardest rain coming home that I ever seen. We got stuck just N. of Ben's.

3. (Mon) Jess' finished moving to day, got pretty well straightened up. Bobby was awful sick all after noon. It was raining again this evening.

5. (Wed) This is Lou Hay's sale. We went to the sale awhile, then went to town. I went to the Dr. and got medicine. Went to Ladie's Aid.

8. (Sat) Allen, Aldene and Agnes came out for supper and stayed all night. This is a beautiful morning. Pretty cool. They took Viola to the Hospital this afternoon.
9. (Sun) We went to church. Boyd stayed at the church for dinner. I went to Florence's.
10. (Mon) We had a big frost this morning. Boyd helped wash. Mrs. Woodyard was here begging for the supper at the Methodist church. I gave her lard.
11. (Tue) Allen is 13 months old today.
12. (Wed) I went to Sadie Hobson's to the club meeting with Lillie this afternoon. It is getting pretty cold this eve.
13. (Thu) Allen, Aldene, Jim and Florence and the children came out last night. The girls stayed. We dug the gladiolas.
14. (Fri) The girls went home this morning. We went to Aldene's for supper and went to church, then to the party at the church.
15. (Sat) I just did the work to day.
16. (Sun) We were ready to go to Fred's when Frank called that they were coming. They got here about 8:30. Jess and Elsie were here for dinner. Aldene and Allen came over in the afternoon. We went to town to see Florence's in the evening.
17. (Mon) Frank's left at 8:15 this morning. I went to the speaking at Farmerville with Lillie and Noie.
18. (Tue) I washed this morning. I took Elsie to town with me this after noon. They brot Viola home this after noon. Clara Cox was married Oct 12 to Elmer Thompson.

20. (Thu) I ironed this morning. We were ready to go to Earl Cox's to the shower and they called that Viola was bad so went to town.
21. (Fri) I stayed all day in town. Went to the carnaval and got me a new pair of slippers. Boyd came in to Florence's for supper.
22. (Sat) Viola is better this A.M. We went to town this eve to the corn show. Jim and Florence came home with us.
23. (Sun) We went to Fred's to day. We had so much trouble we never got there till 12:30. Got home about 5:30. We then took the kids home and took Viola a chicken.
24. (Mon) I just did my work and worked on a tray this after noon.
25. (Tue) I washed this morning. It is awful warm.
26. (Wed) I was alone all day. Boyd and Ed filled silo at Mr. Beatys. I ironed this morning and walked up to Noie's this after noon. She brot me home. Viola seems better.
27. (Thu) I went with Noie to the Missionary Meeting at Mrs. Andricks in Divernon.
28. (Fri) We went to the party at Bois 'D'Arc church this evening. Had a nice time and a nice supper. We are having beautiful weather.
29. (Sat) I kept Marie and Allen to day. Got along pretty well. We went to the jitney supper this evening. Aldene and Agnes came home with us. Allen came after he closed the shop.
30. (Sun) We went to see Viola and then went to church. Aldene and Agnes stayed here and got dinner. Curt and Emma were here all after noon. Dale Timmons and his family were here a while in the evening.
31. (Mon) I was about all in to day.

2. (Wed) I ironed this morning and went to town and helped serve at the Ladie's Aid. Had trouble coming home. It was 6:45 when I got home.
3. (Thu) 13 little chickens hatched today. I went to the pie social at Rose Rutherford's with Noie and Lillie. There was a terrible crowd. We went to Jess' to a party. Jess had to pull us.
4. (Fri) We butchered a hog this evening.
5. (Sat) I rendered the lard this morning. Had a hard days work to day.
6. (Sun) We went to see Viola and Fred and Joe were there. We went to church and Mrs. Fielding's came home with us for dinner. It is real cold, only 18 above 0 here.
7. (Mon) I worked on the car curtains all day.37 Got a letter from Flossie. It rained all after noon.
8. (Tue) I put the curtains on the car this after noon. They look pretty good, if I do say it.
9. (Wed) Elsie's birthday. It is awful cold and disagreeable to day. I washed this A.M. Boyd finished plowing the 20 North and began on the other field.
10. (Thu) I ironed this morning and fixed the basement windows this afternoon. Jim, Florence, Aldene and Allen and the children came out his eve.
11. (Fri) Armistice Day - The boys worked on the car. Allen and Aldene went to Allen's uncle's. They took Agnes home sick this eve.
12. (Sat) Jim went home early this morning. Florence and the children stayed and we took them home after dinner.
13. (Sun) We went to church and to Florence's for dinner. Bertha Mortimer's baby girl was born this morning.
14. (Mon) Fritz Barnes' house burned this evening. We went to the fire. We began shucking corn this morning. I washed. Viola was bad again to day.
15. (Tue) They took Viola to the hospital again to day.
16. (Wed) I ironed this morning and colored my dress.
17. (Thu) I made a fruit basket this after noon.
18. (Fri) Mrs. Mann died to day. They put a drain in Viola's side.
19. (Sat) We went to town this after noon. Agnes came home with us. Florence took Marie38 to Springfield today.
20. (Sun) We went to church this morning. To Florence's for dinner and to Mrs. Mann's funeral.
21. (Mon) I washed this morning. It has looked rainy all day.
22. (Tue) I took the car to town and had to leave it. Marie brot me home.

24. (Thu) Thanksgiving - Aldene, Allen and Agnes, Jim, Florence and the children were here for dinner and Jess and Elsie and the children came for supper.
25. (Fri) They brot Viola home this afternoon. She is better. I washed and ironed to day.

11. (Sun) Aldene and Allen were here for dinner to day. Harold, Lynn and Bobbie stayed here today while Jess and Elsie went to Springfield. Jess got in the clutch up North here and we took the children to them.
12. (Mon) I varnished baskets and trays this morning.
13. (Tue) We went to Springfield with Jess and Elsie to day. It rained all day. Mrs. Clark is much better.
14. (Wed) We covered the buggy top today.
15. (Thu) I ironed this morning. Went to Lilly's a few minutes this after noon.
16. (Fri) Tom Fenstermaker committed Suicide this morning. We went over there this after noon.
17. (Sat) We went to town this morning. It is real cool, only 12 above.
18. (Sun) We went to Florence's for dinner. Jess and Elsie were there. We went to Tom Fenstermaker's funeral. It is awful cold.

20. (Tue) It moderated to day, went up to 28. I baked Christmas cookies and made 3 batches of candy.
21. (Wed) I made two batches of candy. We sent Frank's a box to day.
22. (Thu) Curt, Emma and Boyd came out this morning and they killed 2 hogs, one for them and one for us. We put up a Christmas tree this eve.
23. (Fri) We dressed the goose and ground sausage.
24. (Sat) This has been a beautiful day.
25. (Sun) Christmas - We were at Aldene's for dinner. Boyd and Jim came out and did the chores and we went to the exercises. The children gave us a beautiful clock. Aldene, Allen, Jim and Florence and children came home to night.
26. (Mon) Jess and Elsie and children came over for dinner.
27. (Tue) Aldene and Agnes and Marie and I were at Mrs. Drennan's for dinner.
28. (Wed) Marie was real sick. We took her home. The Dr. said it was the Flu. The roads are dredful.
29. (Thu) The Dr. came to see Marie again this morning.
30. (Fri) We went to town to day. Marie is real sick. The roads are dredful. It rained all day.
31. (Sat) This has been a terrible day. Just snowed and blowed all day. It is getting awful cold this eve.
1. Frank and his family lived in Aurora, Illinois. Frank was arriving on the 6 o'clock train.
2. Allen Drennan, husband of Myrtle's daughter Agnes, had the first radio shop in Virden, Illinois. Allen had also been a farmer. While using the disc in the field one day, something spooked his horse. The horse reared up throwing Allen to the ground and the disc ran over his body. He was lucky to be alive but the injuries prevented him from doing the hard work that a farm required.
3. Curt and Emma were Boyd's brother and his wife, Curtis and Emma McKinney.
4. Marie is Myrtle's granddaughter, Myrtle Marie Walker, Florence's daughter.
5. January was the month for butchering hogs.
6. A surprise birthday party was referred to simply as a surprise.
7. Flossie Baines was married to Myrtle's son, Frank..
8. The Newt that is being talked about here is Newt Herrin, husband of Ivalean Cryder. Ivalean (also known as Aunt Ivy) is the sister of Myrtle Dora Cryder.
9. During this time period, Doctors often tapped, or bled, people to get rid of infection.
10. Allen Walker weighed less than 1 ½ pounds at birth. Jim and Florence used a shoe box for a crib and hankerchiefs for his diapers. At about 2 months old he quit breathing and the doctor pronounced him dead. When the doctor saw the soft spot on the top of his head move, he gave him a shot of whiskey to stimulate him. Allen is simply referred to as the baby until he is almost two years old.
11. Myrtle regularly churns her own butter.
12. The baskets were woven, with a board for the center or base. The board was decorated with seeds and dried flowers to form a picture. A piece of glass was placed over the board and the woven sides and handle attached. My father still has the basket that Myrtle made for her daughter, Florence.
13. Fred and Josie were Myrtle's brother Fredrick Cryder and his wife Josephine (Huddleston) Cryder.
14. George and Lida were George Edwards and his wife Eliza (Cryder) Edwards, Myrtle's sister.
15. Myrtle removed 22 baby chickens from the incubator.
16. Bobbie is Robert Vernon McKinney, son of Jess and Elsie McKinney.
17. Tob was the McKinney's hired man.
18. Mrs. Walker is Ella Marie (Hildreth) Walker, mother to Florence's husband, Jim Walker.
20. Jitney was slang for a nickel. It is assumed that the jitney suppers at the church cost 5 cents. They were probably fund raisers for the church.
21. The McBrides' owned the farm that Boyd and Myrtle rented.
22. Samuel McKinney is Boyd's brother.
23. George Drennan was a doctor and came to the house to give the girls a shot.
24. The Grandma McKinney mentioned here was Boyd's mother, Harriet (Crawford) McKinney. She was born 5 Jun 1843 and died 1 Dec 1915.
25. Ella is Myrtle's sister, Ella (Cryder) Balty.
26. Emma is Curtis McKinney's wife. Myrtle's sister-in-law.
27. Harold is the son of Jessie and Elsie (Clark) McKinney.
28. Mrs. Baines was Flossie (Baines) McKinney's mother. Frank's mother-in-law.
29. John McKinney is Boyd's first cousin, the son of Boyd's Uncle Richard.
30. Lynn is Jess and Elsie's son, Richard Lynn McKinney.
31. Harriet McKinney is Boyd's sister.
32. Allen Walker says: "That when he was growing up nobody spoke about what Uncle Frank did. This was during the bad years of the depression, and Frank always drove a new car and dressed like a million dollars." It wasn't until after Allen was married that the family let slip that Uncle Frank "worked in the speakeasy's of Chicago during Prohibition and was a card dealer in the illegal gambling houses." Apparently, his work for the mob also had him traveling across the country from time to time. In later years, Frank worked as an oil distributor, which added considerably to his wealth. He also had a patent on mud flaps for eighteen wheel trucks. His nickname was 'Buck'.
33. Allen Walker was born 11 Sep 1926.
34. The grain elevator burned in Thomasville, Illinois.
35. Flossie and Frank were living in Aurora, Illinois.
36. Aunt Joe is Josephine (Huddleston) Cryder, Myrtle's sister-in-law. She was married to Fredrick Cryder. Aunt Joe died in 1979 at the age of 98.
37. The curtains were for the side windows of their Model T Ford.
38. Myrtle "Marie" Walker is Florence (McKinney) Walker's daughter, Myrtle McKinney's granddaughter. Marie had polio as a young child, and this trip to Springfield was probably to see a specialist.
39. The Boyd mentioned here is Curt McKinney's son, Arthur Boyd McKinney's nephew.
