[David Cryder, Jr.]

The 1850 census for Ross Co, OH lists David as a farmer, 36 years of age, owning real estate valued at $1,800 ($28,180 in 1990 dollars).46

Information received from Marilyn M. Cryder, researcher for the Delaware County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, included extracts from the 1860 census for Delaware Co, OH.47 A copy of the census has David listed as a farmer, 46 years of age. His wife, Rachel is listed as well as four children, Alartine (20), Mary (17), James (17), and Emma Myrtle (4/12). He has Real Estate valued at $7,000 ($101,474 in 1990 dollars) and Personal Estate valued at $1,000 ($14,496 in 1990 dollars). His birthplace is listed as Ohio. The census also lists a William Belta (a pauper), who was born in New York, as living with them. The name Alartine was not interpreted correctly from a poorly written census. Her correct name is Lalcesta, as specified in the Will of her grandfather, James Downs.

On the 1860 census, David and Rachel Cryder were living next to Theodore and Ann Cryder.48 The 1850 census proves that David and Rachel are the parents of Theodore. It has also been discovered in the Will of his grandfather, James Downs, that Theodore and Lalcesta's mother was Mary Ann Downs who married David in September of 1835 and died in 1840. Rachel was Theodore's step-mother.

David Cryder, Jr., and his family, came to Greene County, IL in 1864. They purchased 120 acres from William Baldwin on 17 Dec, being the northwest quarter, the southwest quarter, and the southeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section 13, township 12, range 11 west of the third principal meridian.49 In 1867 they purchased 20 acres of land from their son, Theodore, being the East half of the Northeast Quarter of Section Number 12, Township Number 12, North Range Number 11, West of the Third Principal Meridian, for the sum of $100.50 The article below, from "The History of Greene County" says that David arrived there in 1855, but the census clearly shows that he was still in Ohio in 1860.

The 1870 census shows that David and Rachel had moved to Greene Co, IL. He owned real estate, valued at $7,200 ($74,160 in 1990 dollars), and had a personal estate of $1,500 ($15,450 in 1990 dollars).51

On 26 May 1871 David purchased Lot Number 53, in Worcester addition, in the town of Roodhouse, Greene Co, IL, from John Roodhouse and his wife Sarah, for the sum of $70.00.52 The house was located on the northwest corner of Maple and Franklin Streets. The home was still standing, and occupied, in 1998.

On 12 December 1876, David and Rachel sold 80 acres of their property to their son, James H. Cryder, for $2,500, being the South half of the Northeast Quarter of Section Thirteen (13) in Township No. Twelve (12), North Range No. Eleven (11), West of the Third Principal Meridian.53
