The tympan and frisket are the delivery system for a handpress. They hold the sheet in register, provide the means to do makeready and adjust packing. The frisket keeps the paper from bumping the form until pressure is applied. When closed the whole system sets above the type and below the platen, so it can only be 1/4 inch thick where it slides under the platen.
