Plates rarely broke after I added this 3/4 inch steel bed. I do not reccommend melamine or plywood. The glass is both flexible and strong under an even pressure. This would probably work on the proof press. The one time I tried it, there was too much soft packing, shattering the plate. The shards that did print looked great.
