Rod's MGTD

12/10/2000 still under construction....

 MGTD 1 MGTD 2 MG motor 1 MGTD 3

I purchased my TD in 1970 at the tender age of 17( the car that is! ) and it was all in bits. A friend had wanted to rebuild it whilst he was at the University of London, but money or the lack there of, slowed the project down some. He decided to get married on his graduation and wanted to take a honeymoon in Greece.

I had just finished a 10 year stint in the Royal Air Force and had just come home. Well, with the exchange of 400 British Pounds, about $600. (or one honeymoon in Greece) I found myself the proud owner of one hell of a pile of bits. Most of which were in his loft or bedroom. Soon to be destined for my loft and bedroom. It sure is strange how Mum's don't like that stuff hanging around the house. At least where it can be seen. Although, to my mothers everlasting credit, I was allowed to rebuild the engine and gearbox in the living room. Which allowed me to work long into the night and not catch my death of cold out in the garage.

The rebuild from scratch took 5 months. Fortunately, nearly all the parts were in new or reconditioned state, so the assembly went really well. The hardest part was to strip off all the paint to bare metal and go for the Rolls Royce finish. With the aid of the rent-an-anything shop and a few attempts at trial and error, It started to look just like new.

The story will continue......
