Other Weather Hazards

HEAT - In the summer when it’s hot, be prepared to keep cool. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and keep hydrated to avoid heat related disorders. One chart you should remember to look at is the heat index. By finding where the current temperature and current humidity in your area intersect you can see how dangerous it would be to stay outside in those temperatures.

For more information on heat safety visit http://www.weather.gov/om/heat/index.shtml

SEVERE WINTER WEATHER – Severe weather in the winter months is no stranger to the people of Maine. Prolonged snow storms, Nor’easters, ice storms, and low temperatures are frequent occurrences in New England. You should be prepared ahead of time with food and water when the power goes out, and an alternate heat source to keep warm. Shelters may also be open when a large event occurs like the Ice Storm of ’98. If you go outside when the temperature drops, you may want to refer to the wind chill chart to see how long you can be out without suffering frostbite or hypothermia.

For more information on winter weather safety go to http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/winter/index.shtml

AIR QUALITY – Air pollution and ozone can affect the quality of the air we breathe. Forecasts are made for air quality, the Air Quality Index, to let you know how safe it is to breathe the air when you go outside.
