LEPC HazMat Training
- First responders at the awareness level are those persons who, in
the course of their normal duties, may be the first on the scene of an
emergency involving hazardous materials. First responders at the awareness level are
expected to recognize hazardous materials present, protect themselves, call
for trained personnel, and secure the area (deny entry).
- First responders at the operations level are those persons who
respond to releases or potential releases of hazardous materials as part of
the initial response to the incident for the purpose of protecting nearby
persons, the environment, or property form the effects of the release. They
shall be trained to respond in a defensive fashion to control the release
from a safe distance and keep it from spreading.

- The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) offers more than fifty
independent study course. These are self-paced courses designed for
people who have emergency management responsibilities and the general
public. Fore most of our courses you will need to download and print the
materials. Others are interactive courses that you can take directly
over the internet. All are offered free-of-charge to those who qualify
for enrollment. Each independent Study Course includes lessons with
practice exercises and a final examination. Students who score 75
percent or better are issued a certificate of achievement from EMI.
