When it comes to emergencies, animals, whether they are pets, livestock, or in the wild, have often been overlooked by emergency planners and the general public.

Animal Welfare Society The Animal Welfare Society, located in West Kennebunk, Maine, is a private, non-profit humane society formed in the early 1960's by a group of caring individuals. The founders included the late Mrs. Elmina B. Sewall and the late Mr. Donald Shephard who served as the Society's first President of the Board of Directors. In 1967, the Society became incorporated and has now expanded to a shelter of over 13,000 square feet. Our service area for adoptions and other services extends throughout Southern Maine. We provide municipal shelter services to 18 communities representing a population of nearly 150,000 persons.

We are not an activist group; rather, we seek to effect change by working with scientists in industry, government, and academia to find new ways to replace animals with non-animal methods, reduce the numbers of animals necessary, or refine methods to make them less painful or stressful to the animals involved.

Morris Animal Foundation At home and in the wild, animals enrich our lives. They deserve the same from us. Morris Animal Foundation is a nonprofit foundation that funds humane animal health studies to advance veterinary medicine. Our work helps animals worldwide to enjoy longer, healthier lives. And that makes our lives better, too.
