Loon in bike helmet eagerly racingOxford County ARES provides all communication needs for Loon Echo Bike Trek

The Annual Loon Echo Bike Trek on Saturday, September 23rd 2006, follows a breathtaking route through much of Oxford County, and this year, as in years past, all communications for this 3-part race were provided by Oxford County Amateur Radio Emergency Service, the Yankee Amateur Radio Club and HAM radio operators from as far away as Harmony, ME. In addition to providing communication, the ARES group also utilized their APRS tracking capabilities allowing those stationed at the Shawnee Peak start to track the location of the SAG vehicles, ambulances along the route and the Pace Truck. Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has always worked hard with Federal partners, other state agencies, and county and local governments to be sure that planning and coordination is in place to deal with all hazards. We work very closely with first responders to make sure they have the equipment they need and are trained and exercised on how to use their tools to protect the people of Maine.

On July 29th 2006, Ken and Yvette volunteered their time to staff two booths at the Oxford Fire and Rescue Craft Fair. Ken's booth was located outside and focused on the Oxford County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and our County Animal Response Team (CART) of which Ken is a member of both. In addition, there was information on Pet Preparedness, Pet Disaster Kits, and Pet First Aid Kits. Yvette's booth was located inside and focused on Individual/Family Preparedness and Disaster Kits, as well as information on Red Cross Shelters in Oxford County, helpful tips on how to be prepared for power outages and Sheltering-in-Place.
