MEMA administers Homeland Security Grants in Maine. Since 1999,
more than $70 million has been distributed to enhance homeland security and
all-hazard preparedness across the State.
Grant funds are administered with the assistance of a
multi-jurisdictional, multi-disciplinary review team. Grant priorities have been
established in concert with Maine's
Homeland Security Strategy.
In the several years that grant funds have been available, Maine
has:
-
Built statewide capacity in hazardous materials and bomb
response
-
Made state-of-the art command and control and communications
vehicles available to respond to incidents around the State
-
Provided funds to Maine's major cities and larger
communities to address their eligible public safety priorities
-
Significantly improved local and statewide public safety
communications.
As federal funding levels have decreased, Maine has established
a competitive model to distribute funds based on the current strategy and
priorities. Those priorities include interoperable communications, shelter and
recovery, public awareness, training and exercise.
