Education

     The City of Lewiston has approximately 4,500 students enrolled in its public school during the school year. A Superintendent of Schools and a seven member school committee make decisions concerning education in the city's public school.
     The Lewiston School Department is comprised of six elementary schools, a middle school, a technical center, as well as a high school. Lewiston High School is one of the largest high schools in Maine. It is located on East Avenue. L.R.T.C. or Lewiston Regional Technical Center serves as a vocational technological center for the surrounding areas. It is located on the Lewiston High School campus. The adult Education program is also offered at the high school.
     The Lewiston Junior High School on Central Avenue services all seventh and eighth grade public school students.
     There are six elementary schools in the city for kindergarten through sixth grades. They are Martel, Longley, Pettingill, Farwell, McMahon, and Montello.
     Lewiston has two parochial schools. St. Joseph's and Holy Cross which contain kindergarten to eighth grades schools.
     Two institutes of higher learning are located within the city. Bates College which was founded in the 1860's is located in the center of the city. It is a prestigious liberal arts college with students from all over the globe. In the late 1980 the University of Maine opened a campus on Westminister Avenue. L-A College offers a wide variety of courses to the residents of the community.
     Other types of schools offered in Lewsiton are nursing, hair-fashion, art, and nursery schools.
