Generation No. 1

 

DONALD MCDOUGALL was born in Scotland.  He married MARY JANE LANDLING.  She was born in Prince Edward Island. These are the names and birthplaces given on the record of their son Angus’s marriage. Their son Peter’s marriage record states they were both born on P.E. Island. Donald is listed as a laborer.

       

Children of DONALD MCDOUGALL and MARY LANDLING are:

                  i.    MATTHEW M.2 MCDOUGALL, b. May 12, 1856, Prince Edward Island; d. May 08, 1935, Bar Harbor, ME; m. HENRIETTA (unknown), between 1910 and 1920; b. c.. 1864; d. between 1920 and 1935; both buried  in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Bar Harbor, ME. His death certificate lists his father’s name as Ambrose McDougall.

                 ii.    ANGUS A. MCDOUGALL, b. April 14, 1858, Souris, PEI; d. November 16, 1937, Millinocket, ME. (see below)

                iii.    PETER MCDOUGALL, b. March 1865, Prince Edward Island; m. MARY CASEY, September 09, 1902, Eden, Maine; b. March 1865, Prince Edward Island; daughter of John Casey and (unknown) Doran, both born P.E. Island.

 

NOTES FOR DONALD MCDOUGALL: There are three death records in the PEI card index for men named Donald MacDougall. Donald MacDougall #1. died in 1891 at age 91 (b. 1800) in Canoe Cove and came from Argylshire, Scotland. He was a farmer and executor of a will. There were Landrigans in that area also. Donald MacDougall #2 died in 1875 at 86 (b. 1789) in Belle Creek and came from the Isle of Skye in 1806. Donald MacDougall #3 was buried 30 May 1903 at 81 years in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Grand River. This Donald is likely the same one who married Flora MacDonald and had a daughter Elizabeth baptized in Grand River in 1883 and is therefore not our Donald. There are no birth records for a Matthew or a Peter. There is one Angus McDougall, b. 7 May, 1857 in Belfast and baptized March 18, 1858 by D. Fitzgerald  in St. Paul's Church, Charlottetown, Record Book 1, p. 41. His father is listed as Donald McDougall but his mother's name is given only as "Dancy." The registers at St. Mary’s Parish, Souris and St. Alexis Paris, Rolls Bay show no McDougalls at all in the birth, marriage, or death registers for the 1800s.

 

NOTES FOR MARY JANE LANDLING: There do not seem to be any Landlings in PEI. There are Landrigans and Landrys, either of which could easily have been written as Landling by mistake.

 

 

Generation No. 2

 

ANGUS A. MCDOUGALL was born April 14, 1858, according to family memory in Souris, PEI, and died November 16, 1937 in Millinocket, ME.  He married ELIZABETH ARSENAULT October 02, 1890 in Old Town, ME, daughter of DENNIS ARSENAULT and JENNIE FITZGERALD.  She was born between 1867 and 1869 in Prince Edward Island, and died June 25, 1945 in Bangor, ME. Both are buried in Millinocket, ME. Angus was a carpenter at the time of his marriage and his bride was listed as a “domestic.” Witnesses to the marriage were Donald McDonald and Mary McDougall. Elizabeth’s death certificate lists her father’s name as Charles Ashley, born in Maine, but her mother’s name is correctly given as Jennie Fitzgerald, born in Canada. Elizabeth had been confined in the Bangor State Hospital for twenty years and ten months at the time of her death. Angus McDougall was living with his son Clayton at the time of the 1930 census.

                iii.    CLAYTON H. BAYARD MCDOUGALL, b. January 30, 1895, Orono, ME; d. November 03, 1936, Millinocket, ME. (see below)

                iv.    MARION A. MCDOUGALL, b. May 1898, Maine; d. after December 1965 (see below).

                 v.    HAROLD JAMES MCDOUGALL, b. March 10, 1900, Rumford, ME; d. March 31, 1975, Millinocket, ME. (see below)

                vi.    ALICE CATHERINE MCDOUGALL, b. May 25, 1902, Rumford Falls, ME; d. December 30, 1989, Farmington, ME.; buried Good Will Cemetery, Hinckley, ME. She married 1) Leon Paradis in Boston, MA on July 5, 1920, the son of Alfred Paradis and Denise Castonguay of Quebec Province, Canada. Alice’s mother’s name is here listed as Elizabeth Arserow.

Generation No. 3

 

CLAYTON H. BAYARD MCDOUGALL (ANGUS A.2, DONALD1) was born January 30, 1895 in Orono, ME, and died November 03, 1936 in Millinocket, ME.  He married LENA V. CARRIGAN October 21, 1916 in Millinocket, ME, daughter of DANIEL CARRIGAN and JENNIE (unknown).  She was born February 06, 1898, and died July 02, 1965. Both are buried in Millinocket, ME. Family records indicate that Clayton committed suicide.

 

Children of CLAYTON MCDOUGALL and LENA CARRIGAN are:

                  i.    JAMES C. MCDOUGALL, b. March 12, 1914; d. November 11, 1967. Also listed as Colon P. McDougall in census records.

 

                 ii.    CLAYTON J. MCDOUGALL, b. 1918.

 

 

MARION A. MCDOUGALL (ANGUS A.2, DONALD1) was born May 1898 in Maine, and died after December 1965. She may be the Marie Moore who died May 7, 1981 in Sanford, ME at age 83.  She married (1) FRANK L. YORK October 15, 1913 in Millinocket, ME, son of FRANK YORK and JULIA RHINEHART.  He was born 1891 in New York, and died between 1920 and 1922.  She married (2) LEWIS C. MOORE January 27, 1923 in Brewer, ME.  He was born about 1869 and had been married twice before, first to Annie Closson on September 24, 1897 and second to Alda B. Moody on April 16, 1916. Marian A. McDougall is listed as Marie Ann McDougall in her daughter’s obituary and as Mary A. McDougall on the record of her second marriage. In the 1930 census, she lived on Essex Street, Bangor and her birthplace is erroniously given as New Hampshire.

                  i.    CATHERINE F. YORK, b. 1915 d. Portland, ME; m. NORMAN KIMBALL September 19, 1936; lived with Harold McDougall for a time; son Donald Kimball of Westbrook, ME

                 ii.    CLAYTON L. YORK, b. 1918.

                iii.    MILDRED M. YORK, b. February 04, 1921; m. (unknown) HAZELETT; Mildred is listed as Mildred McDougall in the 1930 census. She was living with her uncle, Clayton McDougall, and may have been adopted by him. She also lived with her uncle, Harold McDougall for a time.

HAROLD JAMES MCDOUGALL (ANGUS A.2, DONALD1) was born March 10, 1900 in Rumford, ME, and died March 31, 1975 in Millinocket, ME.  He married JOSEPHINE M. WILLETTE January 17, 1921 in Millinocket, ME.  She was born 1904, and died July 25, 1980 in Millinocket, ME. They are both buried in Millinocket, ME.
