Ellis Hartley Family

Generation No. 1

Ellis Hartley, born 1851 in Manchester, England; died between. 1884 and 1900.  He married Ellen Haulton before July 18, 1870 in Massachusetts.

Ellen Haulton, born 1847 in N. Billerica, MA; died July 05, 1911 in Lowell, MA.  She was the daughter of  John Haulton and Bridget R. (surname unknown).

Ellis Hartley’s Manchester England birthplace comes from his daughter Eva's death certificate (1900) but that is not certain. On Ellis's naturalization papers in 1872, one Richard Hartley, citizen of the U.S., vouches for Ellis Hartley having been in the U.S. for six years. What connection there was between Ellis and Richard has not yet been established. Other relatives may also be found. Susanna Hartley Emerson's photo album contains a number of pictures with labels. "Aunt Thomeson's" photograph was taken in Passaic, NJ but there is a Betsey Thomeson in the 1880 census for Lowell, MA (b. England 1854); wife of Sunderland Thomeson (b. England 1854) with two children, Fred, 2, and George 5. Photos of "Lincoln and Marrion Hartley" were taken in Philadelphia. The 1900 census includes in Philadelphia a Lincoln Hartley, b. November 1871 <29>, born PA, parents born England; electrician and his wife Marion A. b. August, 1875 <24>, born PA, parents born PA and daughter Ethel b. October, 1897 PA. Marion Hartley's address at 336 N. 60th (no city) was found in Emerson family papers but without a date.

Ellis Hartley emigrated in 1866, probably through Philadelphia, and was naturalized September 13, 1872 in Philadelphia, PA. The 1880 Cenus records that he worked in a dye house although his occupation is given as cabinet maker on his daughter's death certificate. In 1870 he lived in Lowell, MA, but was in Philadelphia in 1872 (naturalization papers),  Maine in 1875 (birth of child), Chester, PA in 1876 (birth of child), at 19 Crosby St., Lowell, MA in 1880, and back in Chester, PA in 1885 (birth of child).

Ellen Haulton, also known as Nellie Hartley, is recorded in the family bible as having died at age 63 but her death certificate says she was 59.  Her death certificate also records she was living at 456 Gorham St., Lowell, MA at the time of her death and died of sun stroke. Information provided by Agnes Hartley gives Nellie's parents as John Haulton (b. England) and Ellen (b. N. Bellerica, MA). Nellie's birthplace is given as N. Bellerica, MA. Susanna Hartley Emerson's death certificate says Nellie was born in England and James's death certificate says Ireland. She was buried July 08, 1911, St. Patrick's Cemetery, Lowell, MA
