A Typical Maine Winter: During an Unusually Warm Decade
It has been said that average is a fictitious middle. Events are either above average or below average; rarely at average. Maine winters are just that. After a decade of snowy winters from the mid '60's to late '70's, Maine experienced some very cold winters in the decade to follow. Once, in 1984, many schools in Maine were closed, not because of snow, but because of minus 40 degree weather. The decade of the 90's saw mild winters with early ice outs. And a rise in a nasty critter usually found south of here: ticks.
Well, once again, Maine weather proved not to be average. One of the coldest winters in a dozen years is upon us, promising to keep robins, loons, and the peepers at bay long into late April or (gasp) May. (And maybe kill off the ticks :) ). Also, this year was without a usual January thaw. Fortunately, spring always arrives and we can all look forward to the beauty that comes with the changing of seasons.
