Who We Are

T

he Parish of Christ Church serves the Oxford Hills area of western Maine.  The Parish was founded in 1897 and has been offering a ministry of worship, education, outreach and pastoral care since that time. The church, built that same year, was designed by Bertram Grosvner Goodhue, who also designed St. Thomas Church in New York City and the West Point Military Academy Chapel.  After many decades of ministry as a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Maine, Christ Church became a Parish in 1974.

The Christ Church family has about 150 members, who come from towns in the Oxford Hills.  Many summer visitors and winter skiers join our year-round folk.

We are an active presence in our local community and participate in local ecumenical groups.  Our rector and several of our members serve in leadership positions at the diocesan level and beyond.

Worship

A

t the heart of parish life and ministry is our worship, which is centered in the Eucharist (Holy Communion), celebrated at 8:00 and 10:00 am on Sunday and at 9:30 am on Wednesday.  We have a full roster of youth and adult acolytes, readers, Chalice Bearers and ushers.  Music is an important part of our 10:00 am Sunday service, with an active choir from September to June.  Following each service, we have a brief time of announcements and sharing in the church, before we “go forth” to Coffee Hour and then out into the world.

Mission Statement

W

e believe God has placed us here to celebrate and proclaim the Good News of God’s Love, revealed in Jesus Christ, as we—

VWorship God,
VShare that love with others,
VAccept one another,
VNurture one another,
VReach Out to others, both inside and outside the parish, and
VWitness to God through our use of our time, talent and possessions.

Sacraments

Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s Body, which is the Church.  Baptisms are administered on Sunday mornings by arrangement with the Rector.

Holy Eucharist is the celebration of Holy Communion.  All baptized Christians are welcomed to receive Communion, as are all who yearn to be fed and transformed by God.

Reconciliation (confession) is available to all who desire it, by appointment with the Rector.

Holy Matrimony involves a period of serious preparation.  Please see the Rector six months or more before the wedding date.

Christian Burial most appropriately occurs from the church and is the right of all Christians.  Consult the Rector for all arrangements.

Unction of the sick (healing and anointing with oil) is available from the Rector upon request.
